2016 Nissan GT-R: Super Sports Car at a Great Price

2016 Nissan GT-R

When you consider the $100,000 price tag for the GT-R you might not agree with me that this is a great car at a fantastic price until you look at the fact this awesome super sports car is being compared to the names of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati and Porsche.  In fact, the only sports cars this one is not less expensive than is the Corvette from Chevrolet, but the GT-R is actually faster than the Corvette so there is no real comparison.  The GT-R shows up with a fantastic engine, awesome performance and the benefit of an AWD system that keeps it well positioned on the track or on the road.

Because this is a super sports car, we will begin with the engine to discuss the features and benefits of the awesome ride.  The engine is a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 for both versions of the car.  The first is the base GT-R which comes in with 545 horsepower and 463 lb.-ft. of torque.  Of course numbers like this are not anything to sneeze at as this beauty can really scream down the road as well as on the track.  When connected to the six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission the transitions between gears or fantastic, dispelling any desire you may have had of interrupting their work with your own fiddling from the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

The upgraded version of this engine comes when the NISMO package is attached to the car which brings the power up to 600 horsepower and 481 lb.-ft. of torque.  Both setups enjoy a 16 city/23 hwy mpg, not that this is an important stat, and with the NISMO package aboard you will quickly be glued to your seat back as this awesome car shows you why it has been so highly anticipated and created such a buzz.

Now that we know what’s under the hood of  this Nissan, how does this awesome car drive.  First of all when you use the Launch Control you can reach sixty mph in less than three seconds, a serious feat for any car.  With this awesome acceleration there has to be some control added to the vehicle.  This comes from the adjustable suspension, perfectly weighted steering and the Brembo brakes which are all in place to help keep the GT-R firmly situated on the road giving you the ride of your life along the track or canyon ridge.

As I said earlier, this is one of the least expensive cars of this power and performance you will find.  The base price comes in at $103,000 with the 45th Anniversary Gold Edition adding $1,000 to the price (sounds like a bargain to celebrate that momentous occasion).  The Black Edition comes in at $130,000 and the king of the lineup, the NISMO shows up at $151,000.  Any of these models are a serious bargain compared to the models from the other manufacturers mentioned, which is the company the GT-R keeps on the track as all others simply pale in comparison.

From the outside the GT-R just looks like it’s built for speed.  It doesn’t carry in the sharp lines of the Italians or the smooth curves of a Corvette, but what it does have is a brash and bold presence to be one of the greatest cars ever built by Nissan.  As the bully at the lunch table of super cars the GT-R will handle the likes of many of the other players before they ever know what happened, sending them packing back to where they came from for a complete redesign.  With this beast on the track you have to come hard or go home crying.

The interior is all sports car for the GT-R.  It’s not made to be a luxury vehicle, nor is it advertised as one.  Even so the looks of the interior are dynamic and enticing .  The look is of a black interior with some gorgeous red trimmings making it look sporty and angry.  Every control is made to improve the overall performance of the car and give you the ride you desire without ever losing control of the car.  This can be the perfect car to take out for a date at night  or to the track to scare the dickens out of your date.

As expected, the equipment is all made for speed and a more engaged driving experience.  The standard features offered include power leather seats, a rearview monitor, dual-zone climate control, a seven-inch touch screen navigation system and an eleven-speaker Bose audio system.  The Black edition brings in the Recaro racing seats, Rays wheels and black carbon-fiber exterior trim.  At the top the NISMO starts with the more powerful engine, a better suspension, a reinforced body and added brake cooling to make it the top player in this lineup.

As for the Anniversary Editions, called the Gold Edition there will only be thirty built which qualifies it as a very limited model that only adds a few trim pieces to celebrate the anniversary.  Options for this car are not on a long list at all.  These packages start with the Cold Weather Package which adds all-season tires and a special coolant mixture.  The Premium Interior package adds hand stitched semi-aniline front seat treatments.  There are a few other accessories which can be bout including the titanium exhaust system for the NISMO which will cost you $12,900.

You can nearly guess my two favorite features of this awesome car.  We discussed both the engine and the value of this car.  Pulling the massive horsepower from this engine is a serious source of pride for Nissan and uniquely each engine is signed by the builder after it’s been built.  The value of this car is amazing considering the company it keeps.  This is truly a sports car you must get if you are in the market for high powered super cars.  This beauty is a work of art from a design and engineering standpoint, ready to put all others to shame and let them have a long look at what the rear of the GT-R looks like.
