An Unlikely Head to Head

06.22.16 - 2016 Chevrolet SS

In the automotive world we typically see vehicles that are part of the same class and level of build as those that are pitted against each other. It seems obvious to do this in order to learn more about what might make the better vehicle to drive, even if that difference is only a small one. Sometimes all that separates a pair of vehicles is a small amount of horsepower and a feature or two that makes for a difference in the drive when they are in the exact same category and class, but what about two cars that are built differently and don’t even cross paths much at all.

The two that we will look at today are the Chevrolet SS and BMW 550i. These two cars are both large sedans and have good power, but that is really where the similarities end. Whenever you hear the brand names you have a completely different set of feelings about what they stand for but the reality is these two vehicles are more similar than you might think which makes for an interesting comparison of two cars that couldn’t come from different worlds.

The Chevrolet SS is a car that is built in Australia and made for the American automotive market. Using a rear-wheel-drive architecture and an engine that is powerful this car is unfortunately on the chopping block and won’t be around much longer. Under the hood is a 6.2-liter small block V8 engine that puts out 415 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. of torque which makes for a great way to enjoy the ride. This car is setup with either a manual or automatic transmission to give you a great way to enjoy the gearing and give you a wonderful drive that is powerful and fast.

On the other hand, the BMW 550i is not anywhere near extinction and is built in Germany as expected by this brand name. This car uses a 4.4-liter V8 that is also setup in RWD. One huge difference is the fact this car uses two turbochargers in the engine to help the engine put out 445 horsepower. Another big difference in the powertrain is the eight speed automatic that mates to the engine, which is the only one offered for this car, making for exceptional shifting for you to enjoy. This car is absolutely a luxury model and one that makes for a great drive for you to enjoy.

While we see that both cars have great V8 engines the BMW offers you a ton more features and luxury than the Chevrolet but the price for the SS is around $49,000 while the 550i will cost you more than $67,000. Both cars are large sedans that offer you plenty of space and comfort to ensure you have plenty of space to enjoy the drive. Which one of these cars is right for you? The differences between these two will have to do with price, brand, and availability with the SS leaving the market and the 550i leading the luxury area for us to enjoy and admire. Which one will you choose?
