One Recall Affecting Law Enforcement, Another Affecting the Perfect Drive

11.01.16 - 2014 Ford Police Interceptor

Recalls on any automobiles make for some of the biggest headaches for automakers and for consumers alike. Automakers have a responsibility to learn if their vehicles need to be recalled due to an issue that could cause an unsafe situation for owners. Not only are they expected to announce these recalls, but they are required to contact owners and try to make sure they can visit their nearest dealerships to have the repairs necessary performed on the vehicles. This can cause a serious inconvenience for both the owner of the vehicle and the automaker, but these recalls are an important part of making cars better.

Most recently Ford announced a recall on a car that’s extremely important to our safety on the road. It appears the Ford Police Interceptors have a problem and need to be recalled because of an issue with the fuel pump control module that can fail and cause the cars to stall. Once these cars stall it’s impossible to turn the car back on and continue driving, which makes the officers driving these cars unable to perform their duties. Imagine being an officer on duty when this issue takes place and your car fails to operate.

Thankfully Ford has issued a recall to fix this problem and get these officers back on the road quickly. So far this recall affects more than 88,000 cars and SUVs which also includes all of the Ford Police Interceptors built at the Chicago plant from 2013 until 2015. because this affects so many police vehicles this is a recall that needs to be fixed right away to ensure all of the police vehicles are able to get back on the road right away and back to duty as they help to keep our streets safe.

The police cars aren’t the only ones affected by this recall. During this same time period the Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS and Lincoln MKT were also built at the Chicago plant and are part of the recall. These vehicles are from the same model years. This recall does apply only to the vehicles that are equipped with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine and Ford will replace these fuel pump control modules free of charge for any affected vehicle. If you happen to see a large number of police cars at your nearby Ford dealer don’t be too surprised.

The next recall applies to performance models from BMW. This automaker offers us some of the most impressive driving machines on the road today and has extended their M series groups to the M5 and M6 to give us a midsize sedan and large coupe that are both impressive performance models on the road for us to drive. While this problem doesn’t lead to law enforcement officials being unable to perform their duties, this problem these cars face can cause serious challenges for drivers that may result in collisions and even injuries to those inside the vehicle.

The problem with these performance models is the fact that the driveshafts can facture and then fail. This is not an issue that’s on the result of the cars being driven at high speeds, but has reportedly occurred at lower speeds in these high performance vehicles, which is a serious issue. The model year for this recall is the 2015 models of the M5 and M6, including the M6 Gran Coupe and Convertible making this a recall that affects cars that are meant to be driven at higher speeds in more aggressive ways than most of the cars on the road.

The driveshaft can fracture due to a faulty weld on it. There were two reports of driveshaft failure nearly a year ago and a third one occurred recently which caused the company to investigate the issue further. This is when the BMW engineers discovered this failure could occur between the speeds of 35 and 50 mph when the car shifts from second to third gear. BWM technicians will inspect the driveshaft on any affected model and replace the weld if the one in place is found to be faulty and in need of replacement. This will allow drivers to get back to the aggressive and exciting drive of their M5 or M6 they want to as quickly as possible.
