An Interesting Canadian Offering

12.05.16 - Electra Meccanica Solo

While the vehicles from the Smart company are small and typically only fit two people they do run on gasoline and haven’t been converted to electric as of yet. There is an offering of the Smart fortwo that’s electric, but the range isn’t what you would consider for a daily commute of at least forty miles. The Nissan Leaf is a car that offers a bit more in terms of range and is larger to give you more space for people, but a company from Canada has created a car that could be the right commuter car for most people to drive.

Electra Meccanica, a company from Vancouver offers us a new car called the Solo. This car shows up with one seat, a bit of cargo area for your bags and only three wheels. The Solo offers an all-electric powertrain and a 100 mile range to be the car that will replace your commuter car and give you a way to save money at the same time. Not only can you save money, by not having to buy gasoline, you won’t be putting out any emissions, which is the goal whenever you buy an EV.

Electra Meccanica is the electric division of InterMeccanica, a company known for making reproductions of the Porsche Roadsters that are sold in Canada. This company has studied the habits of commuters and found that most commuters travel forty miles in one direction which means a 100 mile range will be suitable for a commuter car. In addition to this distance, most commuters travel alone, which makes a single seat car the right choice to be the commuting car you drive, leaving the family vehicle for the weekend trips and fun times you get to actually have as a family, saving you the miles on your larger vehicle.

If you’re concerned about the size or the performance of the Solo, don’t be. The electric motor is capable of production 82 horsepower and 149 lb.-ft. of torque and is able to reach sixty mph in only eight seconds. This vehicle also offers you a top speed of 80 mph to be fast enough to be on the highways with other vehicles and not be in the way.

This car is about ten feet in length which makes it only slightly longer than a Smart fortwo, giving us another vehicle that’s easy to park in cities all over the world. This tiny vehicle could be the perfect balance of power and size to make your commute more enjoyable and easier to manage.

The battery can charge to full in only three hours when using a 240 volt outlet or six hours when a 120 volt outlet is chosen. Electra Meccanica says the Solo will cost $15,500 in the US and $19,888 in Canada which might be the only negative for the car since you can buy a car that seats up to five passengers for this price, but you won’t find an EV for that price and certainly won’t find one that’s as unique as the Solo.
