An Interesting Move by Porsche

03.13.16 - 2016 Porsche Macan

When you think of a Porsche model of any kind what typically comes to mind is super sports logic and performance that can’t be beat. This typically comes with Porsche tuning their cars up for more power and capability which makes our favorite sports car brand brings us vehicles that we continually admire and want to drive. It’s this desire to drive that allows Porsche to be a signature brand and offer models that have high prices, but also have some of the best performance we can enjoy on any vehicle on the road.

The action that Porsche is taking has to do with the Macan. This small SUV is one that has a high price tag but worse than the price is the fuel mileage. The Macan S offers a price of $55,450 to start with and runs at 17 city/23 hwy mpg. In an effort to improve both of these aspects of this SUV the Macan will now offer a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine for us to enjoy. This engine will offer up 252 horsepower and 273 lb.-f.t of torque while lowering the overall curb weight of the Macan by nearly 200 pounds.

These changes will give us a Macan that can reach sixty mph in 6.1 seconds (not swift, but also not bad) and comes with a fuel mileage of 20 city/25 hwy mpg. Even though this is an improvement when it comes to fuel mileage numbers it’s not much of a change at all and may have you wondering if it’s even worth the downgrade from the 340 horsepower S model. Actually, this model should do just fine in the US, especially if trends continue which shows us the four-cylinder Macan has been a stout seller for a few years already in Europe.

For those who are concerned about losing power to the competition, it’s time to see what the others have to offer. The Macan is typically put up against the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q5. None of these three have the same horsepower number as the Macan with the four-cylinder engine. The X3 shows only 240, the GLC 241 and the Q5 only 220. The only drawback is the fact that these three competitors are much less costly than the Macan, even with the smaller engine. This is why the brand recognition and desire for Porsche is so important to make this a successful venture.

This new version of the Macan will come in with a starting price of $48,550 which is a great starting point since its much less than the S mode. Of course the way a Porsche is sold many of the options are bought a la carte which can increase the price. We will get our first new look at this Macan when it comes to New York for its debut. The expectation is this will gain similar positive reviews as the V6 Cayenne did a few years ago and bring in a broader audience of shoppers who will enjoy the drive of this new setup on one of the favorite Porsche SUVs.
