Each year some of the most affluent and wealthy people in the world flock to Pebble Beach for the Monterey Car Week and the auctions that take place. Every year it seems like we see new records set and cars that are sold for huge sums of money to bring some of these classic cars to new owners who feel like the winners of a new piece of automotive history. Let’s take a look at some of the most impressive sales that took place during this high priced and seriously impressive annual event and how much some of these cars were sold for.
1985 Ferrari 288 GTO – This beautiful car is only one of 272 ever built and that’s after Enzo Ferrari himself authorized an additional 72 to be built for an exclusively hand-picked customer base. This car offers up a mid-mounted twin turbocharged V8 and some of the first composite materials on any road car. This car was sold at the auction for $2.42 million and is legal to be registered in every state except California.
1904 Mercedes-Simplex 28-32HP Rear-Entrance Tonneau – This is a beautifully kept example of a car that has spanned many years. This car used a massive 5.3-liter four-cylinder engine that made only 32 horsepower, but with the brakes that were only fitted to the rear wheels the power needed to be this low. Because of the efforts of the chief engineer, Wilhelm Maybach this car was surprisingly light in weight and was constructed of the best materials. When new this car cost $7,500 but it pulled $2.805 million at the auction.
1966 Ford GT40 Mark I Road Coupe – The GT40 had all but disappeared, but this example was found in storage in the 1970s and only had minor body damage to the car. After careful restoration this car is now much closer to the original condition that it held when it was on the road. only 31 of these cars were built and with the historic finish of the Le Mans race this car is one that was able to capture a $2.9 million price at auction.
1956 Aston Martin DB2/4 Bertone Spider – This is a car that really is of a singular build. Five of these cars were sent to Carrozzeria Bertone and three were fitted with the open top body and two were made for racing. One of the two was made for road use leaving this one car that was built for racing and has now been able to make its way to the auction and demand a price of $3.08 million on the selling block.
1957 Maserati A6G/54 Spider – This car is one of only ten built to this model. This was the first popular and correctly built road going cars from Maserati and this car is one example of what Coachbuilder Frua had in mind as the bodies for the Spider versions. Using a 2.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that was built out of aluminum this car offers a great engine and one of the most gorgeous appearances in the world. This Maserati was able to capture a price of $3.3 million at the auction.
1931 Bugatti Type 51 Grand Prix Roadster – This is the car you think of when you think of Grand Prix racers as this is one of the most famous ever. Raced by Earl Howe this is a car that brought in the supercharged inline eight-cylinder engine that could make 160 to 180 horsepower at the time. This race car lasted four seasons and was able to capture a $4 million price at the auction sale.
1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider by Touring – This car is one that truly is singular because it was built with the care and parts that seem to be put together from a variety of cars. This car offered a history of being cut apart and then sewn back together when some of the parts went missing. The seller no longer has to stress over this car as it was able to bring in a price of $19.8 million at the auction.
1962 Shelby Cobra 260 – This is the car that’s received all the hype for several weeks. This was the original Cobra that Carroll Shelby built in 1962 and took on tour to gather investors and excitement for the car before it ever made its way to production. As the original chassis number CSX2000 this car was painted a variety of ways to look like Shelby had a fleet of cars and not just this one. This car set a new record for an American car sold at auction by being sold for $13.75 million.
