When you’re looking for a vehicle that can gobble up a trail and still be agile on pavement, there is a Jeep that is the perfect size for you. Get even more for your money when you buy a pre-owned model and have fun dreaming up new adventures with the money that you save.
Jeep Renegade
The Renegade is one of Jeep’s newer vehicles beginning with the 2015 model year. It has its sibling Wrangler’s signature boxy style and will happily zip down a dirt road with the rest of the Jeep family. The Renegade is as sure-footed on paved roads as it is on trails, making it fun to drive even on your daily commute.
Wrangler
There is virtually no terrain that can intimidate a Jeep Wrangler. It’s hard to decide which part of owning a Wrangler is more fun: handling the 285-horsepower engine with the six-speed manual transmission, or the seemingly endless ways you can customize your ride. Your best deal may be to find a used Sport trim and use your savings to modify it to your imagination’s content.
Compass
If you’re looking for a commuter SUV that can handle surprise snowstorms and muddy roads, you should look for the Trailhawk trim. Otherwise, the Compass is a nimble daily driver that delivers reasonable fuel economy in a 180-horsepower engine. One thing to keep in mind: Jeep redesigned the Compass during the 2017 model year, so you’ll want to stay alert if you want the performance and design improvements of the later 2017 model.
Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee
Much like the Wrangler, the Cherokee is one of Jeep’s iconic models. The crossover SUV offers the right mix of capability and comfort. As with most Jeep models, you’ll get the best off-road performance in the Trailhawk package, though neither one will flinch at a snow-covered road. The Grand Cherokee provides an upgrade in premium features, passenger room, and cargo space plus a substantially more powerful engine (290-horsepower vs. the 184-horsepower Cherokee). It also comes with a bigger price tag: the Grand Cherokee’s premium features typically run about $10,000 more than the Cherokee.
Buying Pre-Owned
There are many advantages to buying your Jeep used. The biggest advantage of buying used cars is, of course, not dealing with depreciation in the first years of ownership. You can afford to either upgrade to a premium trim or sock that money away for road trips.
If you’re buying a relatively new vehicle, it may still be under Jeep’s new vehicle warranty. You can opt for a certified pre-owned for the extra protection of the 3-month/3,000-mile limited warranty. Just remember that you pay a premium for that extra protection that comes with buying certified. When you buy any used car, you should get a CARFAX report, so you have a better understanding of the vehicle’s history before you sign on the dotted line.
