The Honda HR-V is a small crossover-style SUV that was initially produced between 1999 and 2006, and then from 2016 until now.
The HR-V designation stands for “Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle”. The original run of the Honda HR-V was not sold in the US, but the 2016 to present model is now sold in the US.
What Is the Difference Between the Honda HR-V and CR-V?
The Honda HR-V is considered a subcompact crossover. It’s slightly smaller than the Honda CR-V, which is a compact crossover. To compare, the HR-V has 24.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, while the CR-V has 39.2 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. The Honda HR-V and CRV look quite similar at first glance. However, the HR-V is immediately recognizable due to its vertically mounted rear door handles.
What Is this Honda Similar To?
Models that compete against the HR-V in the subcompact crossover category include the Jeep Renegade, Mazda CX-3, Hyundai Kona, Kia Soul, Nissan Kicks, and Subaru Crosstrek among others. The 2016 to present HR-V is also built on the same global platform as the now-discontinued Honda Fit. It was primarily brought over to the US market to replace the Fit, which saw its last model year in 2020.
Is Honda Discontinuing the HR-V?
Honda does not intend to discontinue the HR-V in America. In fact, it’s being fully redesigned for 2022. As the largest vehicle in its class, the HR-V has a lot to live up to. The new HR-V is expected to offer both hybrid and plug-in options in keeping with Honda’s commitment to phase out combustion engines as the only power plant in its cars.
A Look At The HR-V 2022 Redesign
The subcompact category of crossover SUVs is taking off as urban drivers love these stylish and economical vehicles. The 2022 HR-V redesign features a bolder exterior with a steeper rear window for a sportier look. The roofline has a straighter profile vs the outgoing model to provide more headroom and improve visibility.
Inside, the new HR-V frees up space with a sleeker dashboard and a freestanding central display. Other objects in the control center have been reduced in size to provide more cabin room, including the steering wheel, knobs, and instrument panel. Honda also improved the rear seats with an additional 1.2 inches of recline. The driver’s seat is positioned slightly higher than the previous model to give a better view of the road.
The big question is what engine Honda will put in the new model. Currently, the HR-V is not offered with a hybrid in North America. Honda experienced its best year ever in sales for electric and hybrid vehicles in 2020. To increase the proliferation of its electric fleet, Honda needs to electrify its popular models like the HR-V in all markets.
The all-new Honda HR-V is expected to be available sometime near the end of 2021.
