The New York Auto Show brought plenty of buzz and excitement to many vehicles, but a true standout in a sea of new rides was the upcoming 2016 GMC Terrain. It isn’t just the new look and style that had heads turning. It’s the value of this segment itself; the compact crossover segment grew by over 17% last year. That means people want this type of vehicle and General Motors is going to give it to them.
With a new grille, wheels, head and taillights, and hood, it’s clear that the outside is changing. However, it’s what’s on the inside that counts and the new Terrain has made technological advancements that focus on an important subject: safety. Blind Zone and Rear Cross Traffic alerts have been expanded beyond the Denali to be available in SLE and SLT trims.
The interior didn’t get left out of the areas of improvement. The center stack has been given additional space for storage and the touch-screen display is graphically improved.
While all of this is nice, there’s something that GMC dealers say will drive more people to buy this refreshed model. Connectivity is in fashion and the new Terrain has it. OnStar with 4G LTE connectivity and a built in WiFi hotspot will be an option. Families will love this feature as they travel and business people love being able to work from the road (as long as they’re not driving at the time!).
It’s not a complete redesign like other vehicles this model year, but there’s a saying that permeates across the automotive industry as well as throughout the world. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The 2015 Terrain isn’t broken. The 2016 just adds a little more to the mix.
The new Terrain is expected to arrive in showrooms this fall.
