The midsized coupe market seems to have all but been abandoned in favor of smaller coupes and sedans. Whether it’s because a midsized coupe seems impractical to many who need a daily driver with four doors, or the feeling that grown adults don’t need to drive a coupe as their commuter car I’m not sure, but the reality is there are very few coupe designs for cars that are marketed as midsized sedans, but the Honda Accord will be one of the offerings that continues to show off with a coupe model for those of us who choose to not quite grow up just yet, present company included.
Why has Honda not abandoned the coupe like so many others have? One reason for sure is the fact it continues to show up on the annual ten best lists for Car and Driver, and with that kind of clout the sales have been better than expected each and every year. For these reasons the Accord continues to roll out in Coupe form offering a fantastic performance and handling for you to get excited to take the drive to and from work and maybe a detour after a workday to stretch out the capabilities of the fun and energetic car.
With a platform that is the same as the sedan, the coupe will show up with a wheelbase that is two inches shorter, making is a bit easier to handle and smoother in and out of sharp and windy turns, the perfect Friday afternoon drive before heading home for the weekend. The 2016 models do have some cool upgrades such as a new grill, headlights, bumper and taillights. The airflow is actually better with a slimmer but wider air inlet to create better flow over the engine, seeming as though Honda expects you to take this baby out and make is show off for you.
Under the hood, where all the work happened to make your driving fun a reality, the Accord will offer both a four-cylinder and an optional V6 to bring the heat. The expectation is the 3.5-liter will be replaced by the new direct injected V6 found in the Pilot which offers 280 horsepower and 262-lb.-ft. of fun that is attached to an awesome nine-speed automatic transmission making all the shifting smooth and easy. The six-speed manual is expected to continue to be offered for the coupe as well and even the CVT for those opting for the four-cylinder with an automatic tranny.
The Accord coupe is one of those cars that continues to make you smile at the thought of driving a car that is both perfect for the carpool during most of the week, but also offers the ability to give a phenomenal driving experience when it’s time to let your hair down and let the road take you wherever it may lead. Looking for a great new daily driver, look no further than your local Honda dealer who will have these 2016 Accord coupes starting in the fall, just in time for some scenic country drives with the leaves changing in a picturesque landscape.
