When a combination of events take place to create something that is able to stand the test of time you should celebrate. In our lives we often think of each passing decade as a celebration of growth and hopefully maturity. Even though most of us act as if getting old is the worst thing that can happen to us, the alternative isn’t exactly attractive. In the automotive industry there are flash in the pan vehicles that show up for one generation or only a few model years on a regular basis with only a few making it to be able to celebrate a decade of excellence.
Not only do some models not make it ten years, but most don’t have the staying power to make it for four decades like the Honda Accord. The Accord is currently celebrating the fact it’s been driving on our roads for forty years. Since the debut in 1976 the Accord has sold over 12.7 million models and has actually been the best-selling car during that time to be the most popular model on the road and one that continues to give us an excellent car for commuting and for driving enjoyment.
Not only has the Accord been on our roads for four decades as of this year, it’s also been the longest running Japanese car that’s built in America. Since the beginning of the production of the Accord in Ohio in 1982 there have been over 10.5 million of the Accord built and sold. This is a collaboration of excellence, of a partnership between American auto workers and a Japanese company and the supply chains in the US that support the Honda factory. The Accord has been so popular that it hasn’t just been built in one plant in Ohio, but also in Birmingham, Alabama, Alliston, Ontario, Canada and El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico.
Starting as a small hatchback that embodied what we needed in the mid-70s the Accord has grown into a family car that we can enjoy and love. When this car first made its way to our shores it represented a need we had to enjoy better fuel mileage from a smaller car as the fuel prices skyrocketed out of control. Now we have a car that offers us a plenty of choices including more powerful V6 engines and a wide variety of features to make the car feel nearly luxury in nature when you reach some trim levels.
With forty years on the road the Accord represents the quality, innovation and reliability that have become part of what Honda stands for. This car is one that offers you a wonderful value by bringing you more for less money. Since being introduced and then produced here this car has been a part of the automotive culture and industry that we have enjoyed even during the times when it was hard for cars to be exciting. Look around you and think about how many cars you see on the road might not make it to forty years and appreciate the fact Honda and America have been making something great together for 34 years of the forty the car has been around.
