Enjoy Your Road Trip with Some Fun Games This Summer

08.22.16 - Road Trip

Taking a summer road trip is one of the most enjoyable things you can do to give yourself a vacation. A road trip across this great country of ours offers you the wonder and splendor of what makes it a great place to live and many beautiful sights along the way. While the romanticizing of what you will see as you drive is fun and you can look forward to the sights, there are still many miles of boredom that await you on the road. Yes, the driving can get long and boring at times, especially when you cross some states that are virtually flat (my home state of Indiana comes to mind) and you need ways to cut this boredom.

When you need a way to pass the time and keep yourselves alert and awake during the drive road trip games are a great way to cut through the miles and miles in between interesting sites. There are a variety of road trip games you can enjoy on your trip, here are some that will keep you entertained and give you some fun as you put miles in with your friends or family in the car with you.

Punch Buggy – This game is one of the most popular, but it’s one that you should consider keeping under control so no one gets hurt. The way the game is played, every time a VW Beetle is spotted the first to spot it yells “punch buggy” and the color and then hits the person next to them. An alternative is to punch the roof instead of another person, but this can be a fun game and keep you on the lookout for the next time you get to throw a punch instead of receiving it.

I Spy – This game is fantastic for kids as they can see an object and give hints as to the color or description while others in the car guess what the object is. The game moves on when someone guesses the object and then they get to choose the next object for all to guess at. The famous line of “I spy with my little eye” has started many games that have lasted for hours or even days on some road trips across the country.

Road Trip Bingo – This game takes a bit of forward thinking as you would need to prepare bingo cars ahead of time. There may be apps on your phone you can use for road trip bingo now, but of course the driver can’t be involved in a game that would take their eyes off the road. In order to play you need to spot an item on your card out the window of the car until you have Bingo, similar to playing regular bingo, but without the regularity of covering the squares.

A is for Armadillo – This game is a twist on the telephone game. Instead of a repeated secret this game tests your memory. The first person says “A is for Armadillo” and the next person is supposed to repeat what A is for and then say what B is for. This runs through the entire alphabet until you get to Z. The first one to mess this up loses the game.

Alphabet Game – This game is a bit easier and uses signs and license plates you see around you. Starting with A you point out when you see the letter on a sign or plate and then move on through the alphabet. This is a great game to play with kids who are learning to identify letters and can be played with numbers as well.

Cow Poker – This is a game about counting cows and it pits the left side of the car against the right side. With this game both sides count the cows on their side of the car but if that side of the car passes a cemetery the side loses all their cows. The first team to an agreed upon number wins this game and gets to be the cow poker champion. Of course you can change up the rules on this game and any of the other road trip games that are meant to let you have fun and enjoy your road trip.
