The next question is when GM will add one of its popular smaller SUVs to the EV lineup, such as the GMC Terrain.
As automakers battle to get more and more EV models into their lineups, it’s now been revealed that GM will be adding an EV version of their popular Sierra truck. The EV version in question is the GMC Sierra Denali. Currently, GM offers the Hummer EV truck and Hummer EV SUV.
EV Sierra Denali Teaser
GM recently released teasers for the upcoming EV Sierra Denali with a preview of the front end. The main clue is the smoothed-out grille, which indicates the eliminated need for cooling with an electric motor. L-shaped headlights define the square nose of the truck with the GMC logo in the middle. It was also revealed that some type of lighting system will be included to show when the EV Sierra Denali is charging, which is similar to the Hummer EV.
Aside from that, details on the new Sierra EV are pretty slim. It will only be available on the Denali trim, however. GM’s Ultium electric vehicle battery platform will once again take center stage, and the new truck will be constructed at GM’s new Detroit-Hamtramck Factory Zero plant. More on the truck will be available in 2022, but it’s not likely to hit production until 2023.
Silverado EV
GM is also preparing for the upcoming release of the Chevy Silverado EV, which is planning to debut in January of 2022 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It will immediately become GM’s flagship vehicle in the company’s push to go all-in on electric vehicles to the tune of $35 billion. The Silverado will also be the first EV truck for GM’s Chevy brand.
As both GM trucks hit the EV market, they’ll have plenty of competition from the Rivian R1T, the Ford F-150 Lightning, and possibly even the Tesla Cybertruck. Ford is expected to start making the EV Lightning in early 2022 after receiving nearly 200,000 orders.
What’s Next?
Those watching the race to increase EV lineups are also wondering when GM will add an EV SUV like the GMC Terrain. The Hummer EV is a luxury vehicle that’s not likely to appeal to the population at large. GM is planning to launch at least 30 new EV models around the world by 2025. Over two-thirds of those models are planned to be available in North America. These new EV models will be included in GM’s various brands, including Cadillac, Buick, GMC, and Chevy. They will also be available at a range of different prices, which should include more affordable vehicles like the GMC Terrain. The Terrain is one of GM’s most popular crossovers along with the Chevy Equinox, which is more or less the same vehicle. However, some buyers prefer the Terrain for its more luxurious details.
As GM delves further into the EV segment, it’s only logical that they eventually focus on the most popular market, which is buyers of crossovers and SUVs.
