Tips for RV Adventures

Nothing beats getting out onto the open road to explore the world around you where you can enjoy adventures in an RV.

Whether you saved up to buy your RV or you’re just renting one to get started, there is a bit of a learning curve. Even veteran RV drivers have room to learn new tricks to improve their road trips.

Regardless of whether you’re taking your first RV trip or are just adding another cross-country notch in your belt, here are some tips for your next RV adventures:

Don’t Push Your Miles

It might seem advantageous to cover as much ground as possible, don’t feel pressured to drive too much at a time. Even if you have someone sharing the wheel with you, try to keep your total miles below 400-500 per day.

Driving an RV may seem like any other vehicle, but that’s not always the case. Driver fatigue is going to set in much faster in your home on wheels than it does in other vehicles. That’s why it’s also critical to take turns driving.

Taking a solo RV trip is definitely possible, but taking at least one other person with you provides options in case someone gets sick, becomes too tired, or just needs a break. Plus, it’s always more fun to share an adventure. Sharing the wheel also means sharing the memories.

Conservation is Key

When you’re traveling the world by RV, your resources may be limited. That means you only have so much water in your tank at a time, and you only have so much room for storage. Depending on where your adventure takes you, there may not be quick and easy options to refuel or repack.

When you stay in a hotel or campground, you tend to have unlimited access to things like water, electricity, and so on. When you travel in an RV, you have a finite amount.

  • Don’t let the water run when you wash your hands, brush your teeth, or wash dishes
  • Turn off shower water while you wash. Turn it back on to rinse
  • Pay attention to how much fuel you use for cooking, keeping water hot, and driving
  • Reuse materials when possible or pack things that have multiple uses
  • Take advantage of rest stops, gas stations, etc. to dump your trash and refill your resources

Bring Change

Bringing change may seem like an unnecessary task in a world with Venmo and credit cards. The reality is that you may need a few quarters for various facilities like pay showers, laundry mats, etc. You might even find having change on hand helps speed up your time at toll booths or getting into attractions that only accept cash. Having some cash, including change, on hand allows you to be spontaneous without having to worry if the attraction takes a credit card.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

Nothing spoils a road trip faster than an accident or injury, especially if you have to change your course to pick up supplies. Obviously, no detour is too long when it comes to safety and health concerns. Don’t shy away from seeing a doctor when the situation calls for it.

Make sure your RV packing list includes items that can be used in case of an emergency. Your route and destination help determine what goes in your kit. For example, a trip through Canada during the winter may require things that aren’t as necessary as a southern summer route, such as blankets, hand warmers, and so on.

Make sure you have first aid supplies, a couple of flashlights, a list of emergency contacts, a portable battery to charge your mobile device, etc.

Plan To Have Fun

For some drivers, a good road trip means having a great plan, while others enjoy spontaneity. The beauty of RV adventures is that you can enjoy it either way. It’s always a good idea to have some general plan in mind, but make sure you leave room for some time off the beaten path. Some of your best memories might include seeing and doing things that weren’t originally on your itinerary.

It’s your world, so it’s about time you go out and explore it. There’s no better way to do so than with a thrilling RV adventure.
