In this battle of midsize trucks, the Chevrolet Colorado gets some extra competition from the return of the Ford Ranger. Before the Ranger’s return, the Colorado was only competing against a few other models in the midsize truck class. These are two iconic American truck brands that both have legions of fans. Let’s take a closer look.

The latest Colorado model only has minor updates for the 2022 model year. The current generation of Colorado has been in effect since 2015, but it has been a highly-ranked top performer ever since. One new update for the Chevrolet Colorado is the Trail Boss package. This off-road upgrade package can be applied to the LT and Z71 trims for a one-inch lift, skid plates, and other upgrades.

The Chevrolet Colorado is an extremely versatile pickup with four main trims and several packages to get what you really want out of your ride. The Colorado also offers a choice of three different engines. Very few competitors in this class offer the range of options that the Colorado has.

Return of the Ranger

Ranger

In its previous incarnation, the Ford Ranger was one of the most popular compact pickups on the market. It was gone from the North American market for seven years, but now it’s back and ready to roll. The Ford Ranger offers one turbocharged engine that has impressive power for towing and hauling. Like the Chevrolet Colorado, the Ranger has several packages available to customize your truck.

The new Tremor package adds extra features for off-road performance and trail-riding. A total of three trims make up the Ford Ranger lineup. All three trims for the Ford Ranger have a lot to offer in terms of value and features. If you want more off-road ability, you can add the
Tremor package to the XLT and Lariat 4WD models. If you want more tech, you can add the Technology package to any model.

Head to Head

Now the question is, which truck should you choose? Some of it will likely depend on your brand preference. There’s no doubt that the Ford Ranger has fans who have been waiting for its return. In terms of towing, the Chevrolet Colorado can tow up to 7,700 pounds while the Ranger can tow up to 7,500. For variety, the Chevrolet Colorado has more to offer with more trims, packages, and engines. However, when it comes to paying the very similar base price between the two, the Ranger is the better value considering its standard engine is more powerful than the base Colorado. Ultimately, your choice will depend on your specific preferences and what you need your truck to do. Both are good choices, but the Colorado does have more options.
