The Hyundai N Vision 74 hits all the right notes, making it one of the most desirable cars to ever come out of South Korea, even though it hasn’t been built yet.
This new Hyundai performance machine celebrates a concept car that’s been lost for years. That car is the 1974 Pony Coupe concept, which was designed by the legendary car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The new Vision 74 concept brings retro design elements with a futuristic powertrain to the racing world. Toss in the limited availability of this new Hyundai, and you’ve got a car that hits all the right notes.
What does this new car bring to the table?
When Hyundai presented this new concept car to an audience of automotive journalists, many were amazed at how close it was to being production-ready. This makes us wonder if this car will hit the market soon, even though Hyundai failed to confirm that it would be made.
Not long after the first display, Hyundai confirmed it will be built in limited numbers. In addition to its limited availability, this incredible sports car will use Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell technology and capability. Currently, only two hydrogen-powered cars are in production: the Hyundai Nexo and Toyota Mirai. Delivering a hydrogen racing car could be a huge step forward for this alternative fuel source.
How much power will the Vision 74 provide?
The production version of the Hyundai N Vision 74 will be powered by a setup that delivers 800 horsepower to the wheels. This figure comes from two electric motors producing 335 horsepower at each of the rear wheels and a hydrogen fuel-cell system making up the difference. The 800 horsepower figure is a relatively new number, reaching 120 horsepower more than the figure offered at the “rolling lab” presentation earlier in 2023.
This setup gives N Vison 74 owners versatility when choosing the power source. The 62.4-kWh battery can be plugged in and recharged in the same way any regular EV can be charged. There’s also an 85-kW fuel cell stack that provides electricity to the two motors during regular city driving or highway cruising. This fuel stack is the same one used in the current Nexo.
When the new N Vision 74 is pushed hard, the battery pack delivers most of the power to handle the high-load, high-demand driving conditions. This combination makes it easy to enjoy the versatility of various fuel sources for this incredible car.
Hyundai is more committed to hydrogen than most automakers
During 2022, Hyundai sold 10,700 versions of the Nexo FCEV, which made it the best-selling hydrogen-powered vehicle. That would be quite an accomplishment if there was more competition, but the Toyota Mirai is all the Nexo is pitted against. This total marks a 57% share of the global hydrogen passenger vehicle market.
In addition to the Nexo, Hyundai has a fleet of hydrogen-powered Class 8 trucks working around the Port of Oakland in California. These Xcient FCEV trucks show that hydrogen can be useful in the trucking world. This has led Hyundai to begin building hydrogen facilities at the new Georgia plant, with plans to run FCEV supply trucks from the plant to the port.
How many Hyundai N Vision 74 models will be made?
Early announcements show that only 100 versions of this new hydrogen and electric car will be produced. Of these 100 vehicles, 70 will be sold to public customers, and 30 are earmarked for racing. Those racing models could be altered to produce more horsepower and downforce and offer better handling on the track.
This limited run of N Vision 74 models means these cars will be gobbled up when the reservation window opens. If this car is to serve as a test bed to prove that a combined electric and hydrogen system can be useful, Hyundai might be going about it the wrong way. The limited run of these Hyundai performance cars might land most of them in the garages of collectors instead of putting them on the roads.
When will this car enter production?
Reports from various sources indicate that production of the Hyundai N Vision 74 should begin sometime in the first half of 2026. We don’t have an expected delivery date yet, but an estimated price for this car is $160,000. This could be one of the most expensive Hyundai vehicles ever produced, with that price coming mostly from the limited production of this car.
Will you see this high-performance, hydrogen-electric sports car on the road? The small number heading to the public indicates most of us will never see this car out on the road, but that might not be the case for versions that make it to some of the wealthiest neighborhoods.
