One Tiktoker Did and Drivers Are Here for It

TikTok Creator Tyler Atkin has taken the internet by storm after he recently went viral for replacing the steering wheel of his 1998 Mazda Miata with an actual classic Nintendo Wii Steering Wheel. Motor Trend first reported on this absurd but entirely plausible enhancement, prompting many to wonder why anyone hasn’t tried it sooner. Miatas are known for their sporty, go-kart feel, and when you think about it, why would a Nintendo steering wheel controller be a good idea? Taking one for the team, Atkin boldly went where no other Miata enthusiast has gone.

In his video, Atkin goes through a surprisingly simple and undeniably entertaining process of taking out his Miata’s Nardi Torino steering wheel and replacing it with a plastic Wii steering wheel. Atkins goes all in by drilling holes and MacGyvering the plastic steering wheel to fit his steering boss.

After his followers were thoroughly impressed by his upgrade, Atkins MX-5 has since undergone many more transformations. Included in his homemade upgrades is a replacement of his shift knob with none other than Nintendo Wii’s nunchuck accessory.

Atkin also used a Wii baseball bat as a replacement for his Miata emergency brake handle. More recently, Atkins has gone as far as removing his Miatas stereo system and replacing it with none other than a Nintendo Wii console. These unorthodox vehicle upgrades have taken the internet by storm with over 3 million viewers tuning in to see how this creative driver is to trick out his Miata further.

While the vehicle restoration might seem a little silly, when you think about it, there’s no better vehicle to outfit with Wii components than a Mazda Miata. This speedy little vehicle is the perfect convertible to transform into a real-life Mario go-kart. Atkins clearly agrees as he’s gone on to nickname his tricked-out Miata a “Wiiata.”

Atkins sat down for an interview with IGN In which he shared his inspiration for his creative, yet undeniably fun auto upgrades. “I just like to mess about with stuff; keeps me busy and I thought I’d record it.”

Atkins explained that after he uploaded the video of his steering wheel upgrade, the enthusiasm from his fans pushed him to try out even more creative enhancements, many of which were suggested by his followers.

At the end of his video, Atkins takes his tricked-out Miata For a drive, Nintendo Wii steering wheel, and all. Although the upgrade makes the Miata look like a fun little toy to take out, Atkins confesses that driving with his Nintendo Wii modifications makes for a “horrendous experience”.
While Atkin’s enhancements are probably not going to stay on for long, his viral video is sure to have satisfied drivers, especially Miata enthusiasts who have always wondered what it would be like to trick out an MX-5 into an actual Go Kart.
