Best Heavy Duty Trucks for Towing in 2024

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD has everyone talking this year. This beast is one of the best heavy duty trucks for towing in 2024, but it’s in good company.

These Beasts Can Tackle Even the Toughest Jobs

While pickup trucks are all designed to get the job done, only some can stand up to serious use. Heavy-duty trucks like the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD can haul large amounts of cargo over long distances safely.

When choosing a heavy-duty pickup, towing capacity is almost always a buyer’s top concern. There’s more to choosing the right vehicle than picking the truck that’s the most capable hauler, though. These HD trucks excel in multiple ways.

The Chevy Silverado 3500HD Gets the Job Done Right

The Chevy Silverado 3500HD can tow up to 36,000 pounds, but that’s not the only thing it gets right. This truck also boasts a large cabin with seating for six and a full suite of driver-assistance tech.

Chevy’s Silverado 3500 made a huge splash in the performance pickup truck market following its last redesign, but the automaker isn’t resting on its laurels. The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD features newly available trailering tech, including enhanced transparent trailer view cameras and adaptive cruise control with trailering.

Most drivers find that the Silverado 3500’s base-model 6.6L V8 gas engine offers enough power to tow anything they want. Those planning to tow extreme loads should upgrade to the 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 to maximize torque and towing capacity.

The Ford Super Duty F-450 Maximizes Towing Capacity

The 2024 Ford Super Duty F-450 is one of just two trucks with a higher maximum towing capacity than the Chevy Chevrolet Silverado 3500. The F-450 features a maximum towing capacity of 40,000 pounds when properly equipped, but those extra 3,000 pounds come at a price.

The F-450 features a recently redesigned interior filled with luxury features, plus a suite of driver-assist technologies that make it easier to tow heavy loads. The only problem is that too many upgrades can leave buyers facing price tags exceeding $100,000.

Like the Silverado 3500, the F-450 is a six-seater with available 4WD and an available diesel engine. In this case, it’s a 6.7L V8 turbo.

The Ram HD Can Be a Top Performer

Like the Silverado 3500 and the F-450, the 2024 Ram HD can tow an astonishing amount of weight, boasting a maximum capacity of 37,090 pounds. However, the only way to hit that sweet spot is by optioning the 3500 model with the more expensive high-output Cummins diesel engine.

Hauling heavy loads requires serious power, and the optional diesel engine on the Ram 3500 HD is rated at 1075 lb-ft of torque. In this case, the trade-off isn’t just a higher price tag. The Ram HD also gets below-average fuel efficiency for the class.

All three trucks described above are more than capable of hauling heavy loads. The F-450 and Ram HD offer maximum luxury and refinement, but they do it at a price. Drivers who want a heavy-duty pickup that puts work before play will find that the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD gets the job done just as well at a lower cost.
