The time of Cadillac sedans is coming to an end with the CT4 and CT5 models being discontinued after 2026. If you want one, you’d better act fast.
If you’ve been eyeing a Cadillac CT4 or CT5, it’s time to make your move. GM just confirmed that both sedans are getting the axe after 2026. The CT4 production wraps up in June 2026, while the CT5 hangs on until late 2026. Here’s the kicker though – while the CT4 seems done for good, Cadillac promised the CT5 will come back as a next-generation gas-powered car.
The CT5 lives on for the next generation
That’s right, they’re keeping internal combustion alive for at least one sedan, and they’re building it at the same Lansing Grand River assembly plant in Michigan. For anyone who loves the fire-breathing CT5-V Blackwing with its supercharged V8, this gives some hope that performance sedans aren’t totally dead at Cadillac.
The new CT5 could still pack a V8 punch, especially since GM just dumped $888 million into its engine plant for next-gen V8 development. Sure, they say it’s for trucks and SUVs but come on, you know they want to keep that Blackwing magic alive. If you want one of the current models, though, especially those manual transmission Blackwings that everyone raves about, better grab one while you can.
The Cadillac CT4 and CT5 being discontinued means a new platform
The General Motors Alpha 2 platform is only used by these two Cadila sedans that use gas engines. The movement of the brand toward EVs could signal the need to use a different platform for the future CT5 model. The Cadillac CT4 is ending for good, which could mean the new platform for the CT5, which is the midsize sedan, might require the use of the same platform used for the Chevrolet Blazer. This would be unibody SUV engineering in reverse because most SUVs originally began by using a sedan platform.
When will the new CT5 arrive?
The timeline for the next CT5-V Blackwing leads us to an uncertain future. GM hasn’t announced an arrival date for the next generation of the CT5, but has promised it will be an ICE model, and will likely include the high-performance version as part of the mix. The latest investment into V8 engine development means the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 models being discontinued will only be a pause before we see the new CT5 lineup and a V model with a fire-breathing V8 under the hood.
The CT4 and CT5 haven’t been around long
Both of these Cadillac luxury sedans, which each offer a high-performance variant, have been around since 2019 and 2020, respectively. That means they’ve only been on the market for one generation, taking over where the ATS and CTS left off. All four of these Cadillac sedans use the Alpha 2 platform. The CTS used other platforms before the ATS came around, but the CT4 and CT5 have only been alive for a few years.
The movement in the automotive industry seems much faster and more dramatic than ever before, causing automakers to shift quickly to keep up with consumer demand and government regulations. These two sedans will remain the same for one additional model year, and then the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 will be discontinued, which should signal the end of the Alpha 2 platform.
What do the Blackwing bring to the mix
As we lament the discontinuation of these two Cadillac sedans, the saddest part is the loss of the Blackwing models. The Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing uses a 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that pumps out 472 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. This power reaches the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual transmission (the better choice) or a ten-speed automatic. This car hits 60 MPH in 4.0 seconds and has a claimed top speed of 189 MPH, making it an exciting luxury performance sedan.
The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing turns up the heat with a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that delivers 668 horsepower and 659 lb-ft of torque, that is sent to the rear wheels through the same transmissions as the CT4 version. This high-powered monster reaches 60 MPH in 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 205 MPH, making it one of the fastest gas-powered cars in its class.
Cadillac CT4 and CT5 discontinued; the end of an era
It was a short era for these two cars, but the announcement that the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 will be discontinued after 2026 brings sadness to the market. There are fewer luxury performance sedans that can be had with manual transmissions. Thankfully, the CT5 will return and could be the next great performance car from the GM family.
