The term “blockbuster” is typically used for a movie that is about to set records for attendance and income. Could the automotive industry be on the verge of seeing as many as three different blockbusters on the horizon? Are we about to have Star Wars like numbers come from documentaries?
In a recent announcement there will be a documentary in the works sometime this year that will chronicle the life of Ferruccio Lamborghini. This lauded founder of the supercar company that bears his name started his manufacturing and development in the world of agricultural tractors and then on to military equipment during World War II. You might have thought he was always about the supercars, but it turns out he started with something the world needed much more than high powered and high speed machines.
The founding of his supercar company did not even happen until 1963 and he sold both of his companies in 1972, meaning he only had the company that bears his name and has given us some of the most dramatically styled and engineered cars for nine years. The film is said to show how the company passed through many hands including Chrysler and Volkswagen before it permanently became part of the Volkswagen Group through Audi.
I did mention there may be three of these films coming out this year didn’t I? Not to be outdone, there is talk of two films that may show the life of Enzo Ferrari in a similar fashion and possibly even the life of Bruce McLaren. That does make four films, but I’m betting one of the Ferrari films will not be made, leaving us with one for each of these geniuses of the automotive world. For any car enthusiast this may mean a few dates at the theater later in the year when these three films are releases.
As for the blockbuster part, I doubt any of the films will become anywhere near the same level as a Star Wars or even a favorite comedy, but with the list of actors and actresses that have been considered for different roles in just the Lamborghini film the numbers might be greater than expected. As a car guy I expect to find myself glued to my seat (hopefully not from left behind candy or soda) in a theater later this year learning more about these three amazing men who brought us some of the greatest supercars to ever make it to the roads and tracks of the world.
