Geely Coolray: Elevating the Driving Experience

The Geely name isn’t known or sold in the United States, but has made its mark in many foreign markets. The Geely Coolray is a popular choice from this brand.

What is the Coolray? The name sounds exciting and impressive, and it is attached to a popular subcompact crossover. The subcompact size makes this little Geely SUV an excellent choice in many foreign markets, including the Philippines. If you’re on vacation in this wonderful island nation, you might find yourself driving this Geely crossover, which could impress you with its size and usefulness.

Familiar power from an unfamiliar crossover

The Coolray uses a powertrain that sounds like it could be pretty common around the globe, including in the United States. This powertrain is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gas engine that produces 177 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque. This engine is connected to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which sends power to the front wheels. This little SUV isn’t offered in AWD form, but you won’t need it. The Coolray is a small, urban dweller that could be good on the tight streets of many foreign countries where it’s sold.

What platform is used?

The Geely Coolray rides on the B-Segment Modular Architecture (BMA). This is the brand’s high-end technology platform, making this one of the most advanced small vehicles in the brand. You’ll find cool features that give the Coolray a better ride and more capability, including a MacPherson independent suspension in the front and a Torsion beam rear suspension. Unlike many small foreign vehicles, the Coolray has disc brakes on all four wheels, and it features an electronic parking brake with auto brake hold.

The higher trim levels ride on 18-inch wheels, while the lower trim models feature 17-inch wheels to give this SUV an excellent ride and stance.

Is there enough power to make this Geely SUV fun to drive?

The Coolray is a subcompact crossover, which means it doesn’t need a lot of power to get going. The powertrain for this SUV produces the highest output in the class, making it easy to enjoy driving this little SUV. Even the Comfort mode is active and fun, but if you want a more engaging ride, put the Coolray in Sport mode and let it loose.

The only drawback to enjoying some driving fun in this little SUV is the downshifting, which takes much longer than it should. Whether you use the gear lever or paddle shifter to make this change, you’ll feel a delay in the response time. Other than this quality, the Coolray drives well and feels more like a compact sedan than an SUV.

Tech that makes this a modern SUV

When you get behind the wheel of the Geely Coolray, you’ll find some impressive features at your disposal. Some of these include a 360-degree panoramic camera for the Sport versions. The dashboard presents well with a 10.25-inch infotainment system, with a GKUI smart Ecosystem included. You’ll find three driving modes, Eco, Sport, and Normal, giving you the settings you want.

As with most automotive brands, Geely packages safety features and puts a special name on this package. The G-Pilot system is the brand’s autonomous driving technology. This is mostly for automatic parking but can also be helpful when you’re out on the open road.

The Coolray features cool lighting

This new subcompact crossover has projector headlights that come with halogen or full LED lights. The full LEDs come at the top trim level. The Coolray looks like a subcompact crossover with acceptable styling and driving qualities for your time on the road. If you want a more attractive look, the Premium and Sport models are offered with a two-tone paint scheme.

Going inside for quality and comfort

The Geely Coolray features an attractive interior style that’s easy to admire. This area gives you a set of black leather seats with red stitching on the side. The dashboard is two-toned with a red accent color, giving the cabin an impressive style. While looking at the dashboard, you’ll see a 7-inch LCD instrument panel that’s customizable. This screen is only offered for the Sport model of this little SUV.

The new Geely Coolray isn’t offered in the United States, but it could be a common sight in many countries. When you travel the globe, you see many cars that aren’t offered in America, but the Coolray seems to have plenty of qualities that could enable it to be part of the American automotive market. Will the Coolray ever make it here?
